When I was in my first management role (for which I was to be trained - for me it seemed more like trained away) at one of Germany's largest retail companies, I felt a conflict that would not let me go.

Employees confided their worries to me - from exhaustion to illness - because I took an honest interest in them and wanted to find solutions. But no one dared to say them out loud, because unfortunately I was the only one in the company with this approach.

Because when someone tried it once, he was told by the head of the squad:
"Don't piss on my leg - don't say anything to our board! I've worked hard for this position here!"

This elbow thinking was noticeable everywhere - and it was grueling. It destroyed the energy that could have strengthened teams and robbed even those who were actually healthy and strong or longed for inner peace of mind.

Back then, as an apprentice, there was little I could change, but I decided to go and made a decision before I left: I will come back, sometime, somehow and I will make a difference.

I am Lena Gierl

I know what it feels like to be stuck in a system that urgently needs change. As a dual student at Aldi, on my way to becoming a regional sales manager, I was close to the people - employees and customers. But what I experienced there shook me to the core.

The employees confided their worries to me: Exhaustion, illness and a silence that spoke in their eyes but went unheard in meetings. They knew something was wrong, but I was "only" the dual student at the time.

There was a cogwheel in the lounge with the message: "Faster checkout = more customers = more sales". But my gut feeling was that something was wrong. And it wasn't just the employees who confirmed this. Customers also thanked me when I slowed down the checkout - for them it was a relief in the midst of the stress to finally be able to keep up.

When I left the company, my branch manager cried. She said that she would miss me as a person who sees people, not just work.

These experiences have made one thing clear to me: the economy needs a new approach. One that combines humanity and efficiency. One in which turnover and satisfaction are not mutually exclusive, but interdependent. And that's exactly why I do what I do today.
